Indonesia – Organic Certification
In a unique partnering of for-profit and non-profit organizations, Growers First participated in a joint project with Mellace Family Brands to determine how they could work together to develop a social enterprise plan for the Region.
Mellace Family Brands roasts and packages specialty nut products and distributes them through most of the largest retailers in the U.S. Profits help fund social development programs and they were seeking ways to deepen their existing relationship with low income cashew growers and better address their needs. Growers First contributed their expertise to the partnership in the form of programs to build strong cooperatives, practical training and resources, and instruction on gaining organic certification. Organic certification creates a higher quality product, bringing an increased market value which provides the motivation and means to save watersheds and remove chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
As part of building the overall social programs, community leaders will be trained in a variety of agronomic areas that will be passed on to the local growers, creating higher productivity and superior crop yields. People prosper, the environment prospers. Business prospers.
